Dua for waking up

When: As soon as you wake up, before getting out of bed

It is the partner of the bedtime dua: at night we hand ourselves to Allah, and in the morning we thank Him for giving us back.

For parents & teachers

Teaching this dua

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said this dua when he woke up, so it pairs naturally with the bedtime dua: one at night, one in the morning. It is longer, so teach it in three pieces over three weeks. Open the curtains as you say it, and let the first line be the cheerful "thank You" for a new day. Children love the idea that waking up is a present from Allah. A sticky note by the bed or on the bathroom mirror helps both of you remember while the habit forms.

By age: Ages 3–5: "Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana" (the first line). Ages 5 and up: all three lines.
