Dua before sleeping
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6324 · Sahih · Meaning: our child-friendly wording · littleminarets.com
Sleep is a little like dying and waking is a little like coming back to life, so the dua hands both over to Allah: we fall asleep with His name and wake up with it.
Sing it
A gentle bedtime sing-along of the sleeping dua: “In Your name, O Allah, I sleep tonight… Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.” Tips for watching together
For parents & teachers
This is the dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said when he lay down to sleep, and it is short enough for a three-year-old. Say it together every night in the same spot in your routine: after the story, as the light goes off. Say it slowly, pause, and let your child fill in the last word ("amutu wa…" "ahya!"). Within a week or two most children say it on their own. If "I die" worries a sensitive child, explain that sleep is a little like a rest from life, and that waking up is Allah giving us a brand-new day.
By age: Toddlers: start with "Bismika Allahumma". Ages 5 and up: the whole dua, and the waking-up dua the next morning.
