About this page

Our picture book A Star is Born in Mecca opens with this scene: one star brighter than all the rest, shining over the desert valley of Mecca, where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born. The star is a poet's picture rather than a piece of history. It is a gentle way to tell little ones that someone very special was about to arrive. The page is mostly open space, with a few chunky shapes (a star, a crescent moon, palm trees and dunes), so it suits even the youngest colorers.

Talk about it

  • What can you see in the sky at night? Can you find the moon and count the small stars?
  • Mecca is in a desert. Which things in the picture tell you it is a hot, sandy place?

Color tips

Try a deep blue or purple sky with a yellow star, then sandy gold dunes. Leaving a thin white edge around the star makes it look like it is glowing.
