About this page

Printed on the sheet: The famous Green Dome rises above the Prophet's Mosque — color it green!

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his Companions built the first Masjid an-Nabawi soon after they arrived in Madinah, with walls of mud brick, a roof of palm leaves and trunks of palm trees for pillars. Today it is one of the largest mosques in the world. Beneath the famous Green Dome is the place where the Prophet ﷺ is buried. The giant umbrellas in the courtyard fold open to shade worshippers from the hot sun and close again in the evening, which children love to hear about.

Talk about it

  • The first masjid here had a roof of palm leaves. What would you build a masjid from?
  • The umbrellas open and close like flowers. Why do you think they are needed in Madinah?

Color tips

Green for the dome, of course! Cream or white for the walls and minarets, and the umbrellas can be white with a touch of gold.
