About this page

Printed on the sheet: Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam.

The Qibli Mosque stands at the southern end of the Al-Aqsa compound, on the side that faces Mecca, which is how it got its name. Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam. Before the qiblah was changed to the Ka'bah, the early Muslims prayed facing Jerusalem for about sixteen or seventeen months (Sahih al-Bukhari 399). The Prophet ﷺ named it as one of only three mosques worth a special journey, alongside the mosques of Mecca and Madinah (Sahih al-Bukhari 1189). Its rounded dome is gray, not gold.

Talk about it

  • Muslims once prayed facing Jerusalem. Which way do we face now?
  • Count the tall pointed arches along the front porch.

Color tips

A silvery gray dome, warm cream and honey-colored stone, and olive green trees. The paving stones are fun to color in a checkerboard.
