About this page

Two smiling camels walk nose to tail across the dunes, the way camels have crossed Arabia for thousands of years. In the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, long lines of camels called caravans carried goods between Mecca and faraway markets, and as a young man he travelled with trading caravans to Syria. Children are often surprised to learn that a camel's hump stores fat, not water. These are one-hump Arabian camels, the kind still found in Mecca today.

Talk about it

  • How many humps does each camel have? Some camels have two!
  • If you went on a long desert journey with a camel, what would you pack?

Color tips

Camels come in sandy browns, from pale cream to caramel. A yellow-orange sun and a green palm make the page pop.
