Teaching this surah

Children often ask big questions about Allah, and this surah gives them simple, true answers: Allah is One, Allah needs no one, Allah has no family like ours, and nothing is like Him. Learn one ayah a night at bedtime; the 30-minute recitation video can play softly while your child colors or rests. Once it is learned, the Prophet's bedtime habit is a lovely next step: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, three times each (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).

By age: Ages 3 and up: one ayah a night.

About this surah

Al-Ikhlas means "Sincerity" or "Pure Faith". In four short ayat it tells us who Allah is: One, needing no one, with no child and no parent, and like no one else. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said it is equal to a third of the Qur'an (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013). It was revealed in Mecca, and it is short and rhythmic, which makes it one of the easiest surahs to learn first.
