Little Minarets

The Daybreak · Surah 113 · 5 ayat · Qur'an 113:1–5

Surah Al-Falaq

When: Before sleeping, and morning and evening

For parents & teachers

Teaching this surah

This surah is a gift for children who are afraid of the dark: the One who brings the morning light is the One who keeps us safe at night. Keep the explanations simple and reassuring; there is no need to dwell on magic or envy with little ones. Learn it after Al-Ikhlas, one ayah a night, and then add An-Nas. Together the three make the Prophet's own bedtime routine: recite, blow gently into cupped hands and wipe over the body.

By age: Ages 4 and up, after Al-Ikhlas.

About this surah

Al-Falaq means "The Daybreak". It is one of the two surahs of protection (with An-Nas, which follows it), and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited both, with Al-Ikhlas, every night before he slept (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). Tanzil lists it as revealed in Mecca. It teaches children a comforting habit: when something feels scary, we ask Allah, who made the morning, to keep us safe.
